HISTORY

McDougall Avenue is named after Robert Euing McDougall who became Managing Director of the well known Christchurch company Aulsebrooks. He is perhaps better known as the benefactor of the old Christchurch art gallery which bears his name.  Mr McDougall’s home, “Fitzroy” was built in 1898, with an additional residence designed by Cecil Wood later added to the property. This second home has been expanded and transformed into “Fitzroy of Merivale”. The architecture of Cecil Wood has been retained and the interior décor reflects the beauty and elegance of an earlier age.
